The Health Sciences program at Atlanta ISD prepares students for careers in the medical field by providing hands-on training and real-world experience. Through this program, students have the opportunity to earn their Patient Care Technician (PCT) certification, equipping them with essential skills for patient care, medical procedures, and healthcare professionalism.

Our state-of-the-art lab features advanced technology, including simulated mannequins, allowing students to practice clinical skills in a controlled, realistic environment. This hands-on approach ensures that students graduate with the confidence and experience needed to excel in the healthcare industry.

Principles of Health Science

The Principles of Health Science provides an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the healthcare industry. To pursue a career in the health science industry, students will learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students will recognize that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others. The health science industry is comprised of diagnostic, therapeutic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems that function individually and collaboratively to provide comprehensive health care. Students will identify the employment opportunities, technology, and safety requirements of each system. Students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a health science career through further education and employment. 

Medical Terminology

This course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, and singular and plural forms, plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.  To pursue a career in health science, students should learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students will understand that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others. Students are expected to employ their ethical and legal responsibilities and limitations and understand the implications of their actions.

 

Health Science Theory

The Health Science course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will have hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development. To pursue a career in the health science industry, students will recognize and learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students will recognize that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others. 

Practicum in Health Science

Health Science Practicum is designed to give students practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience. To pursue a career in the health science industry, students will learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a health science career through further education and employment. Professional integrity in the health science industry is dependent on acceptance of ethical and legal responsibilities.
