Course Description: This class gives students a basic understanding of theatrical arts and the history of theatre.  Students will participate in classroom activities, read and analyze play scripts, research various jobs in theatre, study musicals, and study famous contributors to theatre and acting. 

1st Six Weeks: Inquiry and Understanding

  • The student develops concepts about self, human relationships, and the environment using elements of drama and conventions of theatre.

  • the relevance of theatre and your creativity, warm ups, observations, pantomime, improvisation, theatre etiquette, critiques

2nd Six Weeks: Creative Expression and Performance 

  • The student interprets characters using the voice and body expressively and creates dramatizations.

  • movement, stage directions, voice production and articulation, ensemble work, theatre etiquette, critiques

3rd Six Weeks: Creative Expression and Performance continued

  • The student interprets characters using the voice and body expressively and creates dramatizations.

  • character analysis, character development, dramatic roles, comic roles, theatre etiquette, critiques

4th Six Weeks: Production

  • The student applies design, directing, and theatre production concepts and skills.

  • playwrights, director, producer, casting, blocking, theatre etiquette, critiques

5th Six Weeks: Production continued

  • The student applies design, directing, and theatre production concepts and skills.

  • set design, set construction, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, props, theatre etiquette, critiques

6th Six Weeks: Historical and Cultural Relevance & Critical Evaluation and Response

  • The student relates theatre to history, society, and culture. 

  • The student responds to and evaluates theatre and theatrical performances.

  • theatre history: early theatre, Middle Ages to 1800, 1800 to the present, musical theatre, other theatre forms, film, television, electronic media, theatre etiquette, critiques

Reading material is available one or more of the following ways:

  • classroom textbook and play scripts

  • online material in public domain

  • Google Classroom

What you need…

  • computer 

  • wide-ruled notebook paper

  • pencils and pens

  • folder

Classroom Rules

  • Be responsible.

  • Be respectful.

Late work policy- student handbook policy

1 day late -20 points 

2 days late -30 points 

3 days late -40 points 

4 days late -50 points 

5 days late -50 points

work not accepted after 5 days…grade goes in as a zero

*The teacher can approve extenuating circumstances.

*If an assignment is due by the end of class and is turned in after class -10 points.

Homework is due at the beginning of class.  If turned in after the first 10 minutes or by the end of the day -10 points.  The teacher can approve extenuating circumstances.

Make-up work

The student is responsible for make-up work.  Make-up assignments will be located on Google Classroom OR in the make-up folder in my classroom.  

Unexcused Absences 

The grade for make-up work after an unexcused absence shall be zero.
