Strength of Atlanta - THSWPA Region 3 Division II Championship

Posted Date: 03/05/2018

Strength of Atlanta enjoyed its inaugural season in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association in 2018. Two ladies endeavored to blaze a trail toward greatness never witnessed in Atlanta before. Caroline Baker-Francis made the decision that she would begin lifting, and, shortly thereafter, Cyrah Jones joined her. Our “team of two” both qualified to lift in the Region 3 Division II Championship on March 3rd in Fairfield, Tx. This accomplishment was facilitated by diligence and hard work by both of these young ladies.

Both Caroline and Cyrah competed in the 259 lb weight class against girls from the thirty other schools in our region. Caroline Baker-Francis, in her first year lifting, became the first female in Atlanta history to earn a medal at the Regional meet. Baker-Francis entered the meet as the 8th ranked lifter in her weight class. When the dust settled, she had vaulted herself into 5th securing her medal. Caroline totalled 675 lbs matching personal bests in the back squat and the bench press. She made a valiant attempt on the deadlift of 340 pounds, which would have sent her to Waco as an alternate in the State Championships, but came up just short. Cyrah Jones became the first medalist in SOA girls history earlier in the year. Jones and Baker-Francis have laid the groundwork for a ladies team to grow and succeed in the very near future.

Strength of Atlanta’s finish in the team totals was atop schools such at Pittsburgh, Liberty-Eylau, Tyler- Chapel Hill and Carthage. Already, in its fledgling stages, SOA has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. As the ladies team grows, it will only become more of a presence in Region 3 Division II.
