Maud Powerlifting Invitational

Saturday, February 17th saw Strength of Atlanta arrive at Maud High School to compete in the Maud Powerlifting Invitational. A group comprised mainly of freshmen took on varsity squads from Gilmer, Center, Marshall, and the like. Due to tremendous effort, the results were fantastic.

Freshman Cody Maxie bested all lifters in the 123 pound weight class with a total of 725. This marked the first gold medal in the youngster’s powerlifting career. First-year lifter Zachariah Jefferson claimed his first medal by taking 5th place in the 148 lb. class. His total weight of 795 pounds was a personal best, so far. Jordan Stiger moved up a weight class to compete with the 181s and finished in 5th place for his first medal, also. His total lifted was 985 pounds, a personal best. This became the first time three freshmen have scored in a single meet this year and, possibly, ever.

Several other lifters competed well, narrowly missing a medal place. Jared Cowgill totalled 1030 pounds on his way to a 6th place finish in the 220 lb. class. Jacob Humphrey deadlifted 405 pounds and totalled 975 in a Herculean effort. Rookies Jeremiah Jefferson and Lakeceion Richardson competed well in the 181s and 148s, respectively. Jordan Prignit lifted in the 148 class, as did newcomer Colin Morris. Morris totalled 725 outperforming half of the field. Freshman Derrick Martin lifted for the first time in his competitive career and performed admirably.

With the deadline to qualify for the regional meet rapidly approaching, Strength of Atlanta has six lifters currently in line to lift on March 3rd in Malakoff. On Thursday, February 22nd, in Maud, six more Atlanta strongmen will attempt to claim a spot on the regional roster. With much excitement and anticipation building for the regional meet, Strength of Atlanta will begin their focus on securing their spots in the State meet in Abilene.
